The Shrubland is located near Jaggedclan territory, a little ways across the Great River. The soil is dry, though not as much as the Scarce Land. Most, however, don’t notice the soil as shrubs, varying in species and size, and grasses cover the landscape. A few evergreens dot the landscape, and birds sometimes rest in them after searching for various seeds and insects. Cats can also use the trees as a vantage point to find prey. Prey is not uncommon here, and while not necessarily plentiful, a skilled hunter could catch enough to fill a belly. The most common prey is field mice, though smaller birds can be caught as well. Snakes, small owls, and other small birds of prey can be found here, though they are not known to attack cats often. In the rain, small pockets of ground can fill up with water, and an opportunistic hunter who knows the land well can easily find mice trying to get a sip.
Spiderfang stepped out of the camp, the ground dry under his paw pads. The night wasn’t very dark, the moon shone brightly on the warriors, illuminating their pelts with a silvery light. The stars flashed brightly in the night sky, small white jewels embedded in the black sky, each one seeming to attempt to outshine the other.
But Spiderfang didn’t pay much attention to the celestial bodies that shone above him, in fact he barely noticed them save for the moon, which signaled that it was time for them to start the patrol.
Spiderfang quickly surveyed his surroundings, paying attention to any smells or sounds that could signify the presence of some kind of night-creature, whether it was an owl or a coyote being irrelevant to the tom.
After the tom knew that there was no nearby threat, he flicked his long head, gesturing for the others to follow as he headed directly towards the Great River and the Clanless Land. His steps were long and his pace was quick, the tom trotting at a brisk pace but at a pace where he could regulate his stamina, not wanting for it to run out before the hunt.
The massive tom sleekly moved around some protruding boulders as he stopped before the Great River, the rocks that surrounded its borders smooth and wet under his paws. Spiderfang smelt the air once again, a pleasant and proud feeling coursing through his blood when he scent the smell of Jaggedclan on the border. His clan was strong, and the scent of the border only seemed to solidify this thought in the tom’s mind.
Spiderfang moved along the bank of the river, stopping when he saw a few rocks barely protruding over the waterline. He jumped on the first, then the second, then the third, water splashing around his paws as it ran over the rocks.
He crossed it, shaking out the water droplets from his long fur before glancing at Koiwhisker and Duneflight, making sure that they were good before continuing deeper into the clanless land, a small feeling of discomfort sitting deep in his belly when he thought about how he was no longer in his playground.
The ground soon changed from rocks to grass and shrubs, and Spiderfang stopped, surveying the land. The moonlight highlighted the various plants that covered the dry ground, the trees appearing especially beautiful in the light. Spiderfang turned to Koiwhisker and Duneflight, looking the two cats in the eyes before addressing them.
”We’ll meet by the river, near the stones where we crossed. Good luck.” He told them simply before heading off into the shrubs, following his nose as he caught the scent of a mouse.
